Programming a radio station with an IPhone

March 23, 2009

We had  staff night out on Saturday night.  I say “staff night out”, it was more six of us in the pub round the corner having a few drinks.

We laughed, we joked, we all commented how great the evening presenter between seven and ten is, we drank and I got constant reminders every 10 minutes that I was supposed to be on air at six am the next morning.

And then we got to about twenty to eleven and there was a sudden realisation between me and a colleague that a very important piece of work had been forgotten about. There had been crossed wires. He thought I was going to do it, I thought he was doing it.  Essentially in twenty minutes time the playout machine was going to hit a stumbling block.

Every song that goes out on air is carefully selected.  The computer picks a whole load of music and the programme controller goes through it and chops and changes bits as he feels appropriate.  But the computer doesn’t do this picking the music automatically, it has to be told to do it first, and that was the bit we’d forgotten about. As a result the eleven to twelve hour was music-less.

Now at this point you are probably thinking “how unprofessional and careless”. But it wasn’t a massive problem as the system that handles the playout of the music should randomly pull music in to fit and everything should sound fine… “in theory”. But the computer doesn’t listen to songs, it just knows them by name.

When done manually, all the songs are chosen in the correct order to sound good on air, so there is no extreme opposites. Eminem followed by Aled Jones, that sort of thing. (we don’t play either of those artists, that was just an example). The computer can’t do that.  As a result the following hour could be a very spiky and ever so slightly obscure listen.  Equally the computer could happen to select a perfect mix of tracks.  Could we trust it?

Even after a few drinks we had decided no, we couldn’t trust it. It runs on Windows for a start. Now with fifteen minutes spare alarm bells were ringing, what would we do?  And after a few minutes pondering, I asked another one of my colleagues if I could “borrow” their IPhone.  Another few minutes had passed and I had downloaded a free application from the App store, and I’d managed to remember the remote login details and hey presto, we were sitting in the pub round the corner with the music scheduling system for work in front of us.

By the time eleven o’clock came, music was coming out the radio and everyone in listener land would be  none the wiser that the music had been chosen from the pub.

And I know what you are thinking “a night out, and you end up all crowding round an IPhone trying to schedule music for your radio station sounds a bit boring”.  It was actually a fun game, trying to work out what decades songs came from as not to break any of our music policies.

I may have been a bit hasty having a dig at the IPhone in the past. It saved the day on Saturday and could be a serious contender for my new phone when my contract comes up for renewal in a few months.  Although there is a new offering from Nokia on the way, and I’ve been eyeing up Blackberry’s recently to.  It’ll be a close call.

A severe lack of updates

March 23, 2009

I apologise to all those people that visit every day (according to the statistics that’s about 10 of you) . I’ve been a bit poor with this recently.

When I first started this blog (that’s mostly all the posts that are now hidden and will be used as research for my memoirs in years to come) I was a student who was in class 10 hours a week…… and that was it.

I’m now a student who’s in class about 20 hours a week. And in work on the radio 7 days a week. I’ve gone from being someone who constantly spent the day in bed to someone who very rarely has the time to go anywhere near bed.

And that’s my excuse.  I’m 3 months away from leaving the education system for good, and while I enjoy every second of it, I will breath a massive sigh of relief when it’s over as I’ll be able to concentrate on the radio properly… and this blog… but mainly the radio show.

Christmas, Man Flu, the Internet and Marriage in an ice hotel.

December 27, 2008

Sandwick Sunset

And there Christmas goes for another year.  I’m back from Shetland after my few days break.  Shetland is really nice, but there is very little to do, especially at Christmas time.

Christmas was good, although quiet. I caught a cold man flu while I was there and are now suffering a little. Emma has no sympathy for me (she’s still not impressed that I left her for a few days).

It dawned on me while I was home that on Christmas day it would have been 10 years since I got the internet.  How times have changed. In 1998 we connected via a 19k modem to a local rate Shetland number to connect to the internet.  I was limited by my dad to 2 hours a week, although on Christmas day 1998 BT ran a special offer where all local calls were free after an hour connected. I remember spending the whole day on the computer (it did take a whole day to anything on the internet in those days).

Now a days I have super fast always connected broadband. Although I did get the impression that Shetland’s broadband network is slowly crumbling with the number of users (and BT are not planning on upgrading it any time soon).

In other news, Emma is already talking about marriage. We were watching a programme on BBC 2 where Joanna Lumley went in search of the Northern Lights in Norway and stayed in an ice igloo hotel. They have a marriage chapel. Emma has decided we’re getting married there. Better get saving…

Radio wise, filling in on Drivetime Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Give us a listen if you have nothing else to do, www.originalfm.com. Also on 6am New Years Day morning, I don’t expect you to be awake.

Flying home for Christmas

December 22, 2008

Snow

Off home to Shetland for a few days tomorrow.  Took the unusual step this year of booking the plane instead of the boat. I’m quite glad I have, the boat has had its fair share of cancellations in the last couple of weeks. The plane also has the added benefit of only taking an hour, versus 12 on the boat. I don’t mind the length of boat trip, I quite enjoy it at times, but when you are only home for 4 days it seems a waste of time.

I’m not sure Emma is too impressed that I’m disappearing for a few days, especially over Christmas.  We had our Christmas at the end of last week, spending a couple of days in Glenshee which is where the above photo was taken.  It snowed which was nice (but apparently it always snows in Glenshee at this time of year – it is a ski resort after all!)

Radio wise, Christmas is/was always my favorite time of year.  You get to hear your favorite presenters doing different shows at different times. With that in mind, here’s what I’m doing over the next couple of weeks.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday of this week I’m on air my normal shifts 7-10pm.  (Despite being off to Shetland tomorrow, try and work that one out if you want).

Christmas Day/Boxing Day off.

Saturday December 27th normal shift of 2-6pm (including Aberdeen v Hearts live football).

Sunday December 28th, normal shift of Sunday Breakfast, 6-10am.

Monday 29th, Tuesday 30th, Wednesday 31st, Drivetime 2-7pm (looking forward to this one)

Thursday 1st January Breakfast, 6-10am. Working that early on New Years Day should be interesting.  Will sleep from 10am onwards!

Friday 2nd January, back to normal, on air 7-10pm.

Starting Afresh

December 10, 2008

I’ve decided to start afresh with this blog.  For various reasons.

Mainly, the last blog was 2 and a half years old (which in the world of David Lewis is quite a long time).  Things have changed quite a bit in the last 2 and a half years and quite frankly some of those really old posts make me cringe.  I have kept those old posts just in case I ever decide to write memoirs in years to come.  I’ll maybe go through them one day and decide which ones the world can see again, but for now they are hidden.

I’ve also moved the blog over to wordpress.com, it’s a bit like Flickr, but for blogs instead of photos. Why?  Well like Flickr, I could have put all my photos on my own website, but then no one would ever have found them.  Stick them on Flickr and suddenly people find them.  It’s the same with blog postings, I hope.

I’m going to try and do something useful with davidrlewis.com. Possibly a website which promotes me as a radio presenter, TV production graduate and freelance grass cutting. That is work in progress.

And maybe I’ll blog a little more than I used to. I’ve promised that before, and it is yet to happen.

Dr Karl

December 9, 2008

Dr Karl

Everytime I meet a “celebrity” I end up having a little bit of a smile on my face for the rest of the day. I’m sure it is something that will soon wear off after a few years in the radio industry.

Today was the the turn of Dr Karl Kenney from Neighbours (his real name is Alan Fletcher, but he answers to Karl).  What a nice and friendly man.  More than happy to take part in anything you asked him, and more than happy to get your photo taken with him (take note Noel). I suppose he thrives on this sort of thing.

The work load has been increased recently. I’ve gone from 14 hours on air a week to 23 hours (if only it was in one go, I could host nearly a whole day of Original 106).

You can now hear me,

Monday – Friday, 7 till 10pm.
Saturday, 2-6pm, the Saturday afternoon sports show (hosting a sports show still amuses me slightly).
Sunday, 6 till 10am, Sunday Breakfast (strangely was a really good experience despite being up at ridiculous o’clock on a Sunday morning).

106.3/106.8FM in the North East of Scotland, or www.originalfm.com if you want to listen online.
